The Great British Tune Up #4

Great new British music from all the many strange and wonderful places that make up the mp3 blog world.

The Coral, those scousers who went missing for a while, have made a reappearance. And a new album. “…they look backwards rather than forwards for inspiration. And this album harks back to some golden 60’s pop.” @ headphonesex

Music For Robots are using Sleeping States (featuring on NBGL earlier this week) to cure insomina “It’s all low-fi, with papery oohs and ahhs in the background, and some dusty drums. It’s a beautiful vocal melody, and I get lost in it.”…. funny how Said the Gramophone have also discussed sleep in relation to Sleeping States “a blissful, dreamless sleep slept in a graceful supine”. The album, out 10/9 (9/10 for Americans) is expected to feature in a lot of best albums lists.

Victorian English Gentlemens Club are recommended - “It’s a punk song … everything in the song seems to either made of sharp edges, or set at severe angles” @ FluxBlog

Even mp3 blogs post chart music, sometimes. “Calvin Harris has created is disco in his own image: bedroom producer of the YouTube generation, behind his Amiga computer, making beats & riffs like it was 1984, the year of his birth.” @ 3hive

My podcast, Take Your Medicine has a new show out, it features music I’ve featured on this site sometimes, some British music I’m not allowed to give away for free (boo!), and other really good new music from around the world. It’s around about 30 minutes every 2-3 weeks. @ Take Your Medicine.

Congratulations to Fionn Regan, who has been nominated for a Mercury Music Prize. NBGL friends Slow Club tour with him this Autumn.

Sleeping States

MP3: Sleeping States - Under a Capricorn Sky

Tremoring psch-folk laying down for a moment, taking a brief pause, after some frantic energy exertion, perhaps awaking after a long nights sleep. The speed is not subject to conventional measurement against time and space, for the guitar’s blinking and slow movements begin to make sense at the strangest times.

A classical wave strokes your senses here and in the place where your thoughts and ideas develop you see melody revealing it’s self for a few short moments, like the dream memories that wash out of you, before retreating back in on itself, bringing you back to the world of us.

This track is released as a strictly limited 7″ on my friend Jane’s (Movern Callar) label “The Caspian Label” A: I wonder / AA: Under a Capricorn Sky. After having read what this song is actually about, the word dream crops up - mr sleeping states must be doing something right when i can work that out. You can download another track “A trip to NYC”, one of my favourite tracks of last year at his myspace page and find out about UK + American jaunts on the touring circuit.

Apologies for the brief pause in British music provided here on Nothing But Green Lights, I have been on holiday, but you now have my undivided attention for the rest of the year.
